Research Visitors - COVID-19 Procedures
Boilerplate email to research visitors from sponsoring staff member

This email details important protocols for your upcoming research-related visit to Purdue’s campus. Please review this email, the appropriate links, and return the attached checklist (a pre-filled version of that linked at the bottom) to me prior to your visit. I will be your campus contact/sponsor for the visit, so if that information is requested you can use my name and email. Please be aware that the state of Indiana (link), the city of West Lafayette (link), and Purdue University (link) all have mask mandates that will be in effect for the duration of your visit. If we will be spending >15 minutes closer than 6 feet over the course of the visit, I will need to wear a face shield as a Purdue employee. Please let me know if you would like one as well, and I will ensure it can be provided for you.
Please complete the attached Purdue Research-Related Campus Visitor Safety Checklist and return it to me. In non-COVID information, you may purchase a visitor daily parking permit here. The most convenient parking lot for travel to Birck is the Discovery Parking Lot. Purchasing an "A" visitors permit will enable you to park in the north side of the lot, near the entrance on Nimitz Drive. I can either meet you at the parking lot on your arrival, or you may walk to the front doors of the Birck Nanotechnology Center and we can meet there. |
Plan for BNC visitor(s) and sponsoring BNC staff member
Prep work for sponsor:
- Enough level 1 surgical masks for all visitors (will be provided to visitors in parking lot)
- Secure commercial bottles of water, place them inside SE stairwell exit
From parking lot to cleanroom
- Meet visitor(s) in the Discovery Park Parking Lot, provide them with level 1 surgical masks.
- Escort into BNC, though back staircase entrance.
- Use hand sanitizer on hand.
- Wipe down phones with 2% Hydrogen Peroxide spray on cleanroom wipe.
- Get safety goggles for use in labs or cleanroom, if needed.
- Bring to second floor bathroom for pre-cleanroom bathroom break.
- Proceed to cleanroom aisle to wipe down any large items, move them into blowdown room.
- Complete pre-gowning, with sponsor demonstrating first, then visitor(s), one at a time.
- Sponsor checks video monitor and ensures gowning room is empty. Explains procedure for entrance (one at a time into air shower, hands up, turn around 3 times, then enter and wait). Swipes ID card and holds open, allowing visitors to enter one by one. Sponsor enters last.
- Wedge open door inner door between gowning and pre-gowning to ensure no others can enter the gowning room. Throughout gowning time, sponsor will motion to any trying to exit cleanroom to wait.
- Sponsor collects gowning garments for visitors, including M3 masks.
- Sponsor instructs visitor(s) in how to safely remove their mask, put that mask in their pocket, and don the M3 masks. Sponsor is wearing M3 mask after this, and uses hand sanitizer.
- Visitor(s) don M3 masks, one by one. Sponsor offers hand sanitizer to visitor(s) immediately after M3 mask donning.
- Sponsor and visitor(s) gown up and glove up.
- Sponsor and visitor(s) wipe down any items with 10% IPA on cleanroom wipe to remove particles.
- Sponsor instructs visitor(s) to enter cleanroom air shower into cleanroom (one at a time into air shower, hands up, turn around 3 times, then enter and wait), and wait by entrance door, keeping >6 ft distance from any BNC personnel.
- Sponsor allows door from pre-gowning to close, then enters the air shower/cleanroom.
- Sponsor directs visitor(s) to cleanroom visit area, ensuring 6 feet of distancing between visitor(s) and any other users throughout the visit. Sponsor dons face shield if visit will require >15 minutes at a distance of <6 ft.
From cleanroom to parking lot
- Sponsor escort(s) visitors from cleanroom visit area to gowning room door.
- Sponsor enters gowning room, and waits to allow visitor(s) into gowning room until gowning room is clear of BNC personnel.
- Sponsor wedges open pre-gowning to gowning door so users may not enter from pre-gowning, and will motion to any trying to exit cleanroom to wait.
- When gowning room is clear, instructs visitors to come into gowning room.
- Sponsor and visitor(s) de-gown, placing garments in bin for washing, or if reuse is needed, on the ECE 557 gowning pack positions. Gloves are left on, as are M3s at this point.
- Sponsor instructs visitor(s) on doffing of M3 and replacement of level 1 surgical mask, and supplies a ziplock bag for visitor(s)’ M3 if it will be reused.
- Visitor(s) remove M3, place in bag (if to be reused), replace level 1 surgical mask, and then dispose of gloves.
- Sponsor allows pre-gowning door to close.
- Sponsor and visitor(s) exit cleanroom, with sponsor going first.
- Remove shoe coverings and hair net, visitor(s) dispose of theirs.
- Bring to second floor bathroom for post-cleanroom bathroom break.
- Sponsor brings visitors to SE back entrance for exit. Sponsor provides water bottles for use outside the facility, if needed.
- Sponsor escorts visitor(s) to cars. Sponsor gets lunch, dinner, etc. separately from visitor(s), and does not shake hands.
