What is UC4?

UC4 is a job scheduling system capable of coordinating information flows across many systems capable of internet connectivity. It is very similar to old batch processing applications, but more modern and user friendly in many ways. The extensive online help sections, GUI and centralized information repository should increase productivity across the University as time continues.

UC4 talks with everyone, from the Department of Education to Purdue Libraries, and every customer in between. It's heavily used by Banner and Basis, as well as less flashy groups like Printing Services.

Operators are mostly concerned with the monitoring aspects of UC4 operations. They are strongly encouraged to become familiar with the language of the system, departments served and main contact personnel.

Launching UC4 Client:

  • UC4 client is located under Automic folder on Windows Start Menu
  • Launch the client by navigating to Start Menu -> All Programs -> Automic -> UserInterface
  • Physical location for the client on the PC is C:\IOC\Automic\UserInterface\bin\UCDJ.exe

Missing UC4 Client after re-image:

  • Contact Supervisor or Manager if UC4 Start Menu Shortcut and Automic folder on PC are missing
  • LS Support has to manually pushed the client again
  • Follow the UC4 re-install steps to locally install UC4 client while waiting LS Support to push the client

How to re-install UC4 (also called Automic) after re-image:

  • Get UC4 Files from Operations Drive (file path is Z:/Operations/B22 Station Imaging/Automic)
  • Copy whole Automic folder to a flash drive
  • Unthaw the machine
  • Log In with the “lsops” account (even if you get a temp profile this is ok).
  • Copy whole Automic folder to C:\
  • Launch UCDJ.exe located in C:\Automic\UserInterface\bin\
  • Make sure that the client is working correctly
  • Log off
  • Log in again with oszones account
  • Launch UCDJ.exe located in C:\Automic\UserInterface\bin\

Logging in

Client 10 - production environment

Unless otherwise specified, the connection must remain UC4, the client 10, and the Department IOC. The group login for UC4 is IOCOPS. UC4 will display user logins in all caps.

A UC4 user will get five attempts to access the system before the account is locked out. Locked out users must contact a production control administrator (PCA) to regain access.  If prompted for a password change at logon, change it and note the new password at the Passwords page.

The PCAs are in charge of assigning UC4 accounts. Please direct inquiries regarding password issues, access, lockouts, etc to them.

Configuring UC4

The configuration process for UC4 needs to be done only once, as it will be saved for future logins. Please refer to this section to confirm UC4 is configured properly, but unless directed by a PCA, make no changes from what is shown here.

A proper UC4 configuration now looks like the following picture. Take note of the 4 activity windows arrayed around the new monitoring tool. Also note that job status is always visible unless in the held queue.

What is the Cockpit?

This is the main view for monitoring UC4. Normally it will be like above when everything is running smoothly. The different sections are labeled as so: Abends are reported from the left circle, down agents reported via the circle on the right, and file transfer abends are displayed in the center rectangle.  The text boxes below each of these items will change depending on the situation. In the majority of abends or down agents, the Cockpit will instruct the user to contact the on-call PCA.

In the event of missing text instructions: If either circle goes red call the on-call PCA.

If the rectangle goes red, a file transfer needs to be restarted. If the restart fails, contact the on-call PCA.  Please refer to UC4 Common Operator Tasks document for guidelines on contacting Production Control.

If the "Last Refresh Time"does not update every minute, restart the UC4 client. If a restart does not resolve this problem, contact the on-call PCA right away.  Please refer to UC4 Common Operator Tasks document for guidelines on contacting Production Control.
