Retired - 03/23/2023 - SAP Check Printing

The checks from SAP print periodically on the Xerox printers. Sometimes there are problems with the printing system that the IOC will help with.

Access to print server

Use SecurCRT or some other SSH Client to connect to lpvsapprnt01.itap.purdue.edu

Basic commands on print server

list all status information for the available print queues

lpstat -t

list all print jobs that have completely spooled over to the printer

lpstat -W completed -t

Troubleshooting

If you get a Spectrum alert about connectivity being lost to one of the printers, or if Xerox calls or emails that they have no print jobs waiting in the morning, then check the status of the queues with: lpstat –t

Here’s an example of when a queue could not connect to a printer:

[autopca@lpvsapprnt01:PRODUCTION:/load/PROD/interfaces/esaso_ipf_osor_in]$ lpstat -t

Note the red text shows that the queue is attempting to connect to the printer.

The green text is a print job waiting to be sent to that queue’s printer.

Basic troubleshooting steps would be to restart the queue and then, if need be, have Xerox restart the printer:

disable the queue with this command:

/usr/sbin/cupsdisable PS_CHECK2_9050

then enable the queue with this command:

/usr/sbin/cupsenable PS_CHECK2_9050

If the print job does not begin spooling to the printer and it still has trouble connecting have Xerox personnel restart the printer.

After they restart the printer check the queue. You may have to restart the queue again. This may have to be repeated more than once.  On a few occasions it has been necessary for Xerox to reseat the network cable on the printer.

When the queue reconnects you will see it spooling over with a percentage of completion. If it is a small job it will just disappear from the queue. You will then have to check the completed jobs list. Confirm with Xerox that once the job is gone from the queue that they are printing something on the corresponding printer.

All printers connected and no print jobs waiting will look like this:

[autopca@lpvsapprnt01:PRODUCTION:~]$ lpstat -t

On a rare occasion a print job may become lost.  If Xerox says they have an incomplete print job and the queues are empty (as above) then the print job will have to be recreated. In this case, contact Production Control for assistance.

Escalation

If connectivity between the print queues and the printers cannot be reestablished via the basic steps outlined above then the issue will have to be escalated.

Contact LS Operations Management so that they may coordinate the troubleshooting effort with the appropriate groups: ITaP Unix ITaP Networks (VPN tunnel provided by third party affiliate Wintek ) Xerox
