IOC Remote Monitoring (generally, and COVID-19 specifically)

There may be times when remote monitoring of the IOC becomes necessary/preferable. Much of the following information is specific to the current COVID-19 pandemic and response, but is broadly applicable to other situations that might necessitate remote monitoring. This information will continue to be updated as the current situation evolves, and future needs present themselves.


Most1 IOC functions can be performed without a physical presence in TEL, STEW, or even on campus. Such remote functions will require off-site operators to possess the following:

  • Stable, high speed internet connection
  • A Plantronics or other USB-headset with microphone
  • A Jabber client*
  • Remote desktop access to an IOC machine
  • Ability to connect to the/a Purdue VPN - (https://support.purdue.edu/goldanswers/168490)
  • A home or Purdue-issued computer capable of remoting into an IOC machine

*NOTE:  Jabber can be found at \\nas01.itap.purdue.edu\itap_call_center\ITCSCallCenter\Tools\CiscoJabber-Install-ffr.12-8-0


Remoting Into IOC Machine - IOC Machine Names

(COVID-19 specific)

Each shift (1-3) has a designated remote machine. Please remote into the machine assigned to your shift. 


Shift 1 = CSDS-12382 (IOC)

This machine is physically located in TEL. Most IOC programs can be located in C:\IOC.

Metasys is accessible from the Start button under Johnson Controls.

Shift 2 = CSDS-06889 (STEW)

This machine is physically located in STEW, adjacent to the laptop docking stations. Most IOC programs can be located in C:\IOC.

Shift 3 = CSDS-09895 (Hotel)

This machine is physically located in STEW, at the IOC Hotel desk. Most IOC programs can be located in C:\IOC.

Metasys is accessible from the Start button under Johnson Controls.

Using a computer dedicated to your shift should reduce or eliminate the issues that have occurred with multiple users trying to access machines simultaneously, or needing to query the group to determine what machines are available. By using the machine assigned to the appropriate shift, remote users should be confident that a machine is available for them.

Beginning your shift:

  1.  Connect to webvpn.purdue.edu or webvpn2.purdue.edu via Cisco AnyConnect
  2. Open Remote Desktop Connection from your home computer (personal or University-issued)
  3. Enter your shift's assigned remote machine (i.e. for first shift, CSDS-07664) in the computer drop-down box
  4. Your User name should display BOILERAD\(whatever your username is)
    1. If it does not, click "show options"
    2. Change the Domain and username as necessary
  5. Hit connect
  6. A login window will appear
  7. Enter your career account password, and click "ok".
  8. When the remote desktop loads, remember to open all of the necessary IOC tools:
    1. Browser Tools
      1. IOC log
        1. IOC Log
      2. Grafana 
        1. Dashboard
        2. Services Update Tool
        3. Message Updater Tool
      3. Xymon

After your shift:

  • Please be sure to restart the remote machine when your shift ends. Only disconnecting leaves an active profile on the machine, and makes it difficult for the next person to connect/login properly.
  • Be aware that if your off-site machine goes to sleep, it may drop the VPN connection. Please make sure your machine has its sleep setting disabled or appropriately delayed during your shift.
  • Remember to [@jibble out] using Teams timeclock channel.


IOC Reporting-Line Remote Monitoring 

Calls to the IOC Reporting Line can be forwarded to an alternative number, temporarily.  (ALL SHOULD HAVE THE IOC NUMBER ON SOFT PHONES CURRENTLY)

To forward calls on the IOC line to another number (this must be done from the physical IOC phone), perform the following procedure:

  • Select the IOC line on the VOIP phone.
  • Press the Forward All soft key.
  • Enter a phone number (see below).
  • Look for confirmation of the forward on your phone display.
  • To cancel call forwarding, press Forward Off.

Note: If you forward to the 5 digit extension of someone else, if that person does not answer, it will go back into the original called party's voicemail. 

This can be used for forwarding to any phone, including another VOIP phone, a soft phone (Jabber, etc.), or mobile phone. Campus phones (VOIP, Jabber, etc.) need only the 5-digit on-campus number to forward to. Off-campus numbers (i.e. cell phones) need to be entered in their entirety, including a "7" to go off campus (i.e. 7-555-5555 for local number, or 7-1-555-555-5555 for not-local number).



1While/if campus is still operational, there may be a continued need for building access by other IT departments, contractors, etc. Thus, disbursement of building keys will, at this time, not be an IOC task that can be performed remotely.
