What IS a Virtual Private Network (VPN)?
A Virtual Private Network is a connection method used to add security and privacy to private and public networks, like WiFi Hotspots and the Internet.
Virtual Private Networks are most often used by corporations to protect sensitive data.
Features of a VPN:
- Hides your IP address
- Encrypts data transfers
- Masks location
- Access secure locations
AnyConnect Use & Connection:
NOTE: To connect to Purdue's VPN, Cisco Secure Client must first be downloaded and installed, see below.
Download/Install:
To download Cisco Secure Client, open a web browser and navigate to https://webvpn.purdue.edu. It may initially be called Cisco AnyConnect, but will update to Secure Client after you connect to the VPN for the first time.
Known issues:
Windows / Microsoft Products:
- Windows 10 S on their home machine could not download the AnyConnect client and did not have remote desktop built in. The 'S' version of Windows 10 can only install apps from the Microsoft Store.
MacOS / Apple Products:
- macOS 10.10 is not compatible with Cisco Secure Client. Only compatible with macOS 10.15
- If when installing AnyConnect on a Mac, it says there's "already an existing install on this harddrive"
- it's likely a previous install was not removed properly and there's still lingering files,
- Try this fix, https://community.cisco.com/t5/other-wireless-mobility-subjects/osx-removing-remains-from-unusual-anyconnect-uninstall/td-p/2401645
